Frequently Asked Questions
Will I receive more information after enrollment?
Yes! You should receive an informational email a few days before your event.
Is it okay if we arrive late to camp? Or do early pick-up?
Ultimately...yes. It's okay to arrive late to one of our parent-child campouts since most of the schedule is very flexible. However, please try to arrive on time to our sleepaway weekend retreats and summer camps since we form teams and that could throw off the start of the weekend/week for other campers. Keep in mind we want you and your son to get the most out of camp! Nevertheless, please let us know and we'll accommodate for your needs. We would rather have your child arrive late than not at all!
What amenities does St Joseph's Lodge have?
St Joseph's Lodge has: heating and cooling; hot and cold water; 4 showers, 4 bathrooms; dishwasher; washer and dryer; -22 beds (9 bunk beds; 4 single beds); plenty of sheets and bed covers; pillow cases; no wifi, no home phone, and barely any reception; kitchen with two refrigerators; metal utensils, cups, glasses, plates and bowls; chapel and living room that can fit 15 or so each; dining room seating for 22; a fire pit; two floors of decks; Blue ray player and large flat screen tv
Can you describe the platform tents in the upper camp?
There are four large platform tents in the upper camp. Each tent fits 16 campers, for a total of 64 campers. The tents do not have electricity, nor an entrance door. They are elevated above the ground, so they conserve well and avoid bugs. There are two or three bunk beds in each, whereas the rest are single twin beds. Cloth or air mattresses are available for parent-child camps and for all summer camps.
Can my son/daughter keep and administer his/her own medicine?
Yes! They may keep their medicine or turn it in to our chaperones, who will help your son/daughter take them. If he/she needs help, you must print and fill out a medication form for us to be able to dispense medicine (form available in the forms section during the enrollment process). For more info on medicines, you may click on the What to Bring link under the Events Menu.
Can my son/daughter bring and use his/her cell phone at camp?
Yes, they may bring cell phones. However, the use of cell phones by campers depends on the nature of the camp and the activities during camp. Information on this should be included in the informational email prior to the event, as well a contact number. We at River Ridge prefer that campers not use the cell phone so as to be fully connected to other campers and the activities. But we understand that parents have good reasons for their son/daughter to have a cell phone while away from home. Yet note that camp has low reception in most places. This alone helps deter youth from cell phone distractions.
Can dads/moms come visit camp, or come as chaperones and cooks?
Yes, of course! And free of charge! Parents are always welcome to visit their campers, especially during summer camps which are a little longer. This is helpful for younger campers or first time campers. Parents are especially welcome to chaperone for all or some of the camp. Moms are always welcome to help cook! If so, moms can stay at our St Joseph's Lodge.
However, with the exception of visiting parents as guests, please note that all chaperones and cooks must be safe environment trained and have passed a background check! The process takes about 2 hours online and lasts for three years. Please follow the instructions at our Safe Environment Training page.
Do you offer discounts for siblings?
Yes! The amount depends on the nature of the camp, but normally we offer discounts to siblings. Please inquire with the camp director to find out how much you are eligible for.
Do you offer scholarships for campers?
Yes! We have a scholarship fund. Please inquire with the camp director for scholarships. At Camp River Ridge we try to accommodate for families with a larger number of children, or families with financial difficulties. If you find yourself in need of scholarships, please don't hesitate to contact the camp director.
Note that families have the opportunity to donate to our scholarship fund during the enrollment process.
